Free SEO Tools List: What Each One Is Actually Good For
You can run most of the SEO for a small business or a blog without paying for a single tool. Paid suites are faster and see more data, and agencies need them. A Jaipur boutique, a local clinic or a new blog can do very well with free options, as long as you know which tool does which job.
Free tiers and limits change, so check each tool's current terms. The Google tools below have been stable for years and are the place to start.
Google's own tools
Google Search Console
The most important free SEO tool, because the data comes straight from Google. Use it for:
- Queries you appear for, with impressions, clicks and average position
- Indexing status for each page and reasons pages are excluded
- Sitemap submission
- Core Web Vitals and HTTPS reports
- Manual action and security notices
- A sample of external and internal links
If you use only one tool, use this one. Our Google Search Console guide explains the reports in detail.
Google Analytics
Shows what visitors do after they arrive, including conversions. Connect it to Search Console so you can see search queries alongside behaviour.
PageSpeed Insights
Shows real-user speed data where Google has enough of it, plus lab tests and specific suggestions. Useful for finding the heaviest images and scripts. See page speed optimization for what to do with the results.
Rich Results Test and Schema Markup Validator
Check whether structured data is valid and eligible for rich results, such as FAQs, products or reviews.
Google Trends
Compares relative interest in topics over time and by region. It is good for seasonality, like when "rakhi gifts" starts climbing each year, and for comparing two phrasings. It does not give absolute search volumes.
Google Keyword Planner
Part of Google Ads. Free to use with an Ads account, although accounts that do not run campaigns may see broad volume ranges instead of exact numbers. Still useful for keyword ideas.
Bing Webmaster Tools
Often overlooked. It offers its own crawl reports, keyword data and backlink information, and Bing traffic is not zero. You can import sites from Search Console to set it up quickly.
Crawlers
Screaming Frog SEO Spider has a free version that crawls up to 500 URLs, which covers most small sites. It finds broken links, missing titles, duplicate descriptions, redirect chains and more. It runs on your computer and has a learning curve, but it is the standard tool for site audits.
Backlink data
Free backlink data is limited because building a link index is expensive. Options:
- Search Console's Links report, which shows a sample of sites linking to you
- Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, which gives free backlink and site audit data for sites you verify
- Free tiers or limited checks from other link tools, which usually show only the top results
For understanding what you are looking at, read how to read a backlink report.
Small single-purpose tools
Some jobs are quicker with a simple tool than a full suite. These free tools on this site cover common tasks:
- Meta tag generator for writing title and description tags
- SERP preview to see how a page might appear in results before publishing
- Keyword density checker to catch accidental keyword stuffing
- Robots.txt generator for writing crawl rules without syntax mistakes
- Sitemap generator for sites whose platform does not create one
- Anchor text analyzer to check the balance of anchors in a link profile
- Broken link checker to find dead links on a page
Browser-based checks
Chrome's developer tools show page source, rel attributes on links, network requests and a Lighthouse audit. Viewing the page source on any link tells you whether it is nofollow or sponsored without any extension.
A free toolkit by job

|---|---|
| Rankings, queries and indexing | Google Search Console |
| Visitor behaviour and conversions | Google Analytics |
| Speed | PageSpeed Insights, Lighthouse |
| Site crawl | Screaming Frog free version |
| Keyword ideas | Keyword Planner, Google Trends, Search Console queries |

| Backlinks | Search Console, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools |
| Titles, descriptions, robots, sitemaps | Single-purpose tools above |
When free stops being enough
You will feel the limits when you need competitor data at scale, detailed keyword difficulty and volume for hundreds of terms, full backlink indexes for prospecting, or rank tracking across many keywords and locations. Agencies and competitive sites usually reach that point quickly. Most local businesses and small blogs do not. If you are weighing doing the work yourself, our guide on DIY SEO vs hiring help covers the rest of that decision.
Set up the basics today
Verify your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap to both, and run a free crawl of your site. Fix the missing titles and broken links the crawl finds. That costs nothing and puts you ahead of many sites that pay for tools they never open.
